Fundamental principles of inorganic chemistry will be discussed. Topics to be discussed will include the concepts in bonding, trends in periodic properties, molecular symmetry and its relationship to spectra. This course covers theoretical and practical aspects of chemical bonding, descriptive periodic trends, and molecular structure and symmetry of molecules.

Purposes and Objectives of the Course
1. To provide the student with the basic theory and principles of chemistry.
2. To provide some insight into the chemical aspects of the world around us.
3. To understand the relationships between theoretical principles and chemical reactions.
Grading
Grading in this course is on a total point basis. These points are acquired through two Midterm Exams, Quizzes and a comprehensive Final Exam. Midterm exams and final exam dates will be announced latter on. Course grade is based on 50 % midterm exams (25 % from each), 10 % Quizzes and 40 % final exam. A minimum of 60 % of the total points possible must be achieved in order to satisfactorily complete the course.

Attendance:
Attendance is necessary for learning. Class participation is necessary for learning. Attendance does not include working on other assignments during class time and it does not include talking among yourselves on topics that are outside of the class topic. Although attendance records may not be rigorously taken every class period, each student decides his or her level of class participation and the instructor will take note of this.
Exams:
Exam Dates will be announced at the beginning of the semester. Make-up exams can only be given if a valid doctor's excuse from the university health center is given to the instructor. During the exam there will be no bathroom breaks, cell phones must be turned off and put away, and only basic scientific calculators may be used. If you don't have an acceptable calculator, either buy one or borrow from a friend BEFORE the exam. Calculators cannot be borrowed during the exam. Absolutely no talking is permitted during the examinations. Points may be deducted from the exam at the instructor's discretion.

Physical Chemistry is the study of macroscopic, atomic, subatomic, and particulate phenomena in chemical systems in terms of the principles, practices, and concepts of physics such as motion, energy, force, time, thermodynamics, quantum chemistry, statistical mechanics, analytical dynamics and chemical equilibrium (Wikipedia)
Physical chemistry is the study of how matter behaves on a molecular and atomic level and how chemical reactions occur. Based on their analyses, physical chemists may develop new theories, such as how complex structures are formed. Physical chemists often work closely with materials scientists to research and develop potential uses for new materials (American Chemical Society, ACS).
The course covers the properties of gases, thermodynamics and its applications to chemistry. It also introduces physical transformations of pure substances, mixtures and chemical equilibrium.
